character information.
POISON IVY

There's a no man's land between love and hate.
Between passion and obsession -- where it's easy
to lose all sense of reality -- and in doing so,
lose yourself. Somewhere in that emotional minefield,
Pamela Isley wanders.

Character History and Personality: Pamela Lillian Isley was born in Seattle, where the land was mineral rich from brushes with the sea. It was the kind of city where the air always felt wet, even on the rare instance when it wasn't raining. She grew up loving that city of gray and green, the girl with red hair. She loved the rich, lush summers that smelled like pine. As a child, she loved the woods, and took to them for endless games of pretend while her parents continued to pour over their wealth behind closed doors. They were emotionally distant and reclusive, her parents. They offered Pamela guidance over affection, and they saw little importance in socializing her with others. As a result, Pamela was a timid, shy girl throughout childhood and adolescence. Although part of her naturally longed for lively friends like the girls who were embracing grunge and reciting poetry in coffee shops, she felt rather inept. She felt herself awkward, secluded, and other. Which is largely why when Pamela enrolled at university to study advanced botanical biochemistry, she was easily seduced by her professor.

It didn't take much effort on his part, all he had to show her was a glimmer of affection. She bloomed for him willingly, craving his attention and his genius without ever questioning what he wanted in return. He injected her with the poisons that would ultimately cause her transformation. She nearly died as a result of the toxicity, and ended up in the hospital for six months. Although Pamela was enraged at the betrayal, Dr. Woodrue had already fled the city to evade authorities. He took with him her belief in justice, her trust. The following semester, she was able to return to classes, and she tried to piece her life back together while persuing her major. But things were different now, nothing would ever quite be the same or as simple as it had been before she'd met Woodrue. After accidentally killing a boy while on a date with him, Isley dropped out of school and left Seattle, eventually settling in Gotham City.

She begins her criminal career by threatening to release plant spores destined to suffocate the populace into the air unless the city met her demands. Batmannaturally appeared and defeated her, and she was incarcerated in Arkham Asylum for the first of many times. She only started a life of crime to attain sufficient funds to find a location to be alone with her plants, so that she might remain undisturbed by humanity. When she managed to escape Arkham, that was exactly what Ivy set out to do. She moved to a desserted island on the Caribbean that was completely devoid of humanity. She turned the island into a second Eden, and for the first time in her life, was happy. Of couse, the island was soon firebombed and destroyed by an American corporation testing highgrade weaponry. After that, Ivy returned to Gotham with a vengeance, punishing those responsible. That corporation made it clear for Ivy that she will never be able to leave Gotham, at least not until she 'purifies it' and the world is safe for plant kind.

So began her time in the Rogue Gallery. Years comprised of plenty of bank heists, mind control, and murder. For years, she fed tiresome lovers, incompetent henchmen, and those who returned her smile to a giant plant. The digestion was slow and painful, and for Ivy it was a kind of guilty pleasure decompression therapy.

Over the years, Ivy made her classification as a villain less black and white. When Gotham City was partially destroyed in an earthquake, she held dominion over Robinson Park and turned it into a tropical paradise where orphaned children were able to come live with her. She sympathized with them like sons and daughters despite her usual misanthropy, having suffered a traumatic childhood herself. During this time, Ivy found Harley Quinn, who had almost been murdered by the Joker, among the rubble of Gotham's tragic earthquake. Ivy nursed her back to health. The two have been best friends and partners-in-crime ever since.

Which isnt to say that Ivy hasn't been betrayed by Harley more than once when it came to the Joker. Most recently, when Ivy tried to convince Harley of the Joker's evil nature, Harley knocked her unconscious. Catwoman made for equally bad company, as she spearheaded the defeat that left to Ivy's latest incarceration in Arkham Asylum.

UPDATE: Switch-a-roo. Ivy is back, freshly affected by the chemicals that initially brought about her transformation. In Gotham, she will be discovering her powers and hopefully learning to control them.

Journal/Key: A fancy phone, although she's more fond of talking through plants.

Love is the world’s inifinite mutability; lies, hatred, murder even, are all knit up in it; it is the inevitable blossoming of its opposites, a magnificent rose smelling faintly of blood. - Tony Kushner, The Illusion
